Medicines have benefits and some have risks. Always read the label and use only as directed. If symptoms persist or you have side effects see your health professional. Brands and generics both contain the same active ingredient(s) and are medically equivalent. Some brands are marketed under different names by the same manufacturer depending on the country of origin. Images are provided as a reference only, the received medicine may vary in packaging, color, pill shape, etc, from one batch to the next. For an item marked "generic" any quality brand may be sent, however you will always receive the active ingredients ordered in the strength(s) ordered.

Pioglitazone is the generic name for a thiazolidinedione medication used to help type 2 diabetics manage blood glucose. The medication makes naturally-occurring insulin more effective. It will not provide benefit in type 1 diabetes or in diabetic ketoacidosis.

Patients typically buy Pioglitazone under brand names, the most widely recognized of which is Actos. It's also available in combination tablets, such as ActoPlus Met, which contains both Pioglitazone and metformin.

Pioglitazone can be effective on its own or it may be used with other antidiabetic medications, including insulin. Lifestyle changes are also very beneficial, and in fact are one of the few ways that dependency on medications to manage blood glucose can be ended.

Effects of Pioglitazone on patients under 18 years of age are unclear; the medication is not usually recommended for use in teens or children.

Taking Pioglitazone

Most patients buy Pioglitazone in tablets, which range in strength from 15 mg, 30 mg, and 45 mg. Tablets are typically taken just once per day, and food is optional with each dose.

If taking only Pioglitazone:

  • Start with 15 to 30 mg once per day.
  • Dosage may be increased, if needed, in 15 mg increments up to 45 mg per day.
  • Do not exceed 45 mg per day.

Patients with congestive heart failure:

  • Start with 15 mg once per day.
  • If well tolerated, and if needed, dosage may be increased up to 45 mg per day.
  • Do not exceed 45 mg per day.

If taking other antidiabetic medications:

  • Dosage should be determined by a doctor.
  • Doses of other medications may also be modified if a patient starts taking Pioglitazone.
  • In some cases Pioglitazone may be administered twice or thrice per day.
  • Do not exceed 45 mg Pioglitazone per day.

For best effects each dose should be taken around the same time each day, and over the long term; patients often buy Pioglitazone for years, even if treatment eventually ends due to lifestyle changes.

It's important that blood glucose be monitored closely at the start of treatment and following any dosage adjustments. Most patients won't notice feeling particularly different unless blood glucose becomes extremely high or low---both of which require medical attention---effects can only be detected by testing blood.

Lifestyle Modifications

Patients given a prescription to buy Pioglitazone will most likely also be advised to make some lifestyle changes. A sampling of the more common suggestions includes:

  • Improving diet
  • Getting regular exercise
  • Reaching or maintaining a healthy weight
  • Managing high cholesterol
  • Managing high blood pressure
  • Quitting smoking

Lifestyle advice will vary to some degree from patient to patient, but is worth trying to acheive. Those who fail to make or maintain lifestyle changes will likely need to buy Pioglitazone or similar antidiabetic medications for the remainder of life.

Rarely some individuals make and maintain significant lifestyle changes but see little difference in diabetes. Others are unable or unwilling to make or maintain such changes. Pioglitazone will still provide benefit in these cases, but benefit is nearly always improved to at least some extent when lifestyle changes are implemented.

Before you Buy Pioglitazone

Unfortunately not everyone is the ideal candidate for treatment with Pioglitazone. Be sure the prescribing doctor is aware if there is any history of or high risk of:

  • Heart attack
  • Stroke
  • Congestive heart failure
  • Liver impairment
  • Bladder cancer
  • Diabetes-related eye problems

The above don't necessarily rule out Pioglitazone use, but they might---there are alternative treatments that may be less risky for some individuals.

Women who take this product may be more likely to break bones; a doctor may advise women with poor bone health to not buy Pioglitazone. A doctor can also discuss methods to improve bone health to help prevent fractures or breaks.

It's generally considered okay to take Pioglitazone while pregnant, though some doctors advise against it. Effects on unborn babies are not well studied, though animal studies involving very high doses did not produce any problems. If taking while pregnant, dosage may need to be modified several times as the pregnancy proceeds, as controlling diabetes is very important.
